How Your Diet Can Help Safeguard Your Hearing

When we talk about protecting hearing, the conversation usually centers on hearing aids, noise protection, or routine check-ups. But one of the most underrated tools for preserving your hearing may be right in your kitchen.

Yes, your daily diet has a direct impact on how well your ears function. Just as the right nutrition supports your heart, brain, and bones, it also plays a key role in maintaining your hearing health. New studies continue to reveal how certain vitamins and nutrients can reduce the risk of age-related and noise-induced hearing loss.

Here’s how the food you eat can help you hear better, longer.

Folate: Nourishing Blood Flow to the Inner Ear

Folate, or vitamin B9, is essential for healthy blood circulation. That’s especially important for the microscopic hair cells deep within the inner ear, which detect and transmit sound signals to the brain. Once these cells are damaged, they don’t grow back—so prevention is key.

Leafy greens like spinach and kale are some of the best sources of folate. Research has shown that individuals with higher folate levels have a lower risk of developing hearing loss as they age. It’s a simple way to support ear health from the inside out.

You’ll also find folate in foods like lentils, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, and fortified grains.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Ears Love Healthy Fats

Omega-3s, the healthy fats found in fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines, are known for improving heart health—but they also benefit your ears. These fatty acids promote strong blood vessels and help reduce inflammation, keeping your inner ears functioning smoothly.

Studies have shown that eating fish just twice a week can significantly reduce your risk of age-related hearing loss. Plus, since your ears and brain work closely together to process sound, omega-3s also support brain health.

Vegetarian? Try flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts for a plant-based omega-3 boost.

Vitamin C: Antioxidant Protection for Your Hearing

We all know vitamin C for its role in boosting immunity, but it’s also a key defender against oxidative stress. That’s important because oxidative stress can harm the structures of the inner ear and lead to gradual hearing decline.

Fruits like oranges, grapefruit, and kiwi, as well as veggies like bell peppers and tomatoes, provide plenty of vitamin C to help maintain healthy ears.

Antioxidants like vitamin C help neutralize free radicals—protecting the sensitive cells involved in hearing from damage over time.

Magnesium: A Shield Against Loud Noise

Magnesium may not be the first nutrient you associate with hearing, but it plays a vital role in protecting your ears—particularly from loud noises. It helps stabilize nerve function and prevents the blood vessels in the inner ear from constricting under stress.

In one study, people who took magnesium before being exposed to loud environments were less likely to suffer long-term hearing damage.

To get more magnesium naturally, reach for bananas, avocados, black beans, whole grains, and leafy greens.

Zinc: Immunity and Repair for the Ears

Zinc supports the immune system and helps prevent ear infections—especially those that can affect the middle and inner ear. It also contributes to the body’s natural healing processes, including the repair of cochlear cells involved in hearing.

According to a study in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, zinc supplementation helped improve hearing recovery in individuals with sudden hearing loss.

Good sources of zinc include pumpkin seeds, cashews, chickpeas, peanuts, and almonds.

Antioxidants: Reducing Inflammation & Damage

Here’s some good news: a little dark chocolate can be good for your ears. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and oxidative damage—two major contributors to hearing loss. It’s also a modest source of zinc.

Of course, moderation is key. But an occasional square of dark chocolate can be a tasty way to support your hearing health.

Your Path to Healthier Hearing Starts Here

Your ears rely on a complex network of tiny cells, nerves, and blood vessels—all of which benefit from proper nutrition. A diet filled with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats provides the building blocks your hearing system needs to thrive.

At SoundGate Hearing Clinic, we believe that hearing wellness is a whole-body journey. Alongside good nutrition, protecting your ears from excessive noise, staying physically active, and scheduling regular hearing tests all work together to keep your hearing sharp for the long haul.

Sarah Binfet

Au. D/Owner

Welcome! I am Dr. Sarah Binfet and I have been a Doctor of Audiology since 2006. I proudly served Veterans at the Minneapolis VA for nearly 9 years. I established Blaine Hearing Center in 2013 in conjunction with my husband's optometric practice. It has been a wonderful partnership and enjoyable to see each other at work! In 2015, I had the opportunity to grow my practice when I purchased SoundGate Hearing from my mentor, Dr. Wendy Davis. I genuinely love what I do and feel that helping people hear is essential to their quality of life. I believe in creating a welcoming and supportive environment in which the patient and their families can be educated on their hearing loss, hearing aid options, and how to have the best success with their hearing aids. At SoundGate, we deeply care about our patients and their outcomes. We want everyone to genuinely enjoy their hearing aids and the benefits they bring. I am committed to offering my patients the most up to date digital hearing aid technology, which is why I carry a full line of manufacturers. There is no one right hearing aid for everyone. It is my job to help my patients navigate the complex works of hearing aids and decide on which products best meet their needs, goals and budget. I have discovered the benefit of giving patients the opportunity to trial hearing aids out of the office. A hearing aid trial is most helpful in navigating the complex journey of better hearing. A Minnesotan through and through, I was raised in Eden Prairie, MN, received my undergraduate degree from the University of St. Thomas and my Doctor of Audiology degree from the University of Minnesota. When not at work, you will find me cooking, hitting up the newest restaurants and fitting in as much yoga as possible. During the weekend, you will find my husband Rodney and me with our three kids, Evelyn, Jake and Sam, loving the outdoors at our family cabin on Leech Lake. I look forward to meeting you.
